Baker, Donald George

(November 2, 1923 - January 31, 2010)

Mr. Donald George Baker 86, of Rockton, Illinois died on Sunday January 31, 2010 at BeloitMemorialHospital. He was born on November 2, 1923 in Beloit to George and Etta (McClellan) Baker. He was a graduate of HononegahHigh School. He joined the United States Air Force during World War II where he served with distinction as a bombardier on a B-17 aircraft. He was shot down over France and was a POW in Germany. On October 27, 1943 he was joined in marriage to Marcella G. Storlie in Beloit. He worked as a tool maker; both at McCurdy Tool for 22 years and at Liberty Engineering for 25 years. While building the family home from scratch, they lived what is now known as the garage for seven years. Woodworking was his favorite hobby. He loved to tell jokes, and his favorite to tell was about ice fishing. His favorite phrase to use was, "and there you have it."

He was a member of the Roscoe VFW, Rockton American Legion, and the American POW™s Caterpillar Club.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Marcella.

Preceded in death by:

Parents, two brothers; George and John, 3 step-sisters: Barbara Helgesen, Margaret Campbell, Mildred McHone, sister-in-law Helen Miller.

The funeral service will be on Saturday February 6 at Rosman-Uehling-Kinzer Funeral Home. Time 3:00 pm. Mr. Lance Bifulk will officiate. Burial will be in RocktonCemetery.

Friends may call on Saturday February 6 at Rosman-Uehling-Kinzer Funeral Home from 2:00 pm until the time of service.
