Busey, Nellie H.

(December 18, 1922 - June 26, 2008)

            Nellie Antoinette Busey died on June 26, 2008 at the Home Bridge Care Facility (formerly the Biltmore) in Belvidere , Il.

 

            Born December 18, 1922, in Beloit, WI.   The daughter of James Dallas and Mary Margaret (Koch) Busey.   Graduated valedictorian of her class from South Beloit, IL. High School and went on to graduate from NorthernIllinoisUniversity and in 1946 received her Masters Degree from the University of Iowa.   An accomplished musician, her dream was to be a piano accompanist, but she went into teaching instead and taught for over 40 years.   Nellie taught in public schools in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois.   As an only child, she returned to Rockford to teach and to help care for grandparents and parents.   She taught Social Studies at GuilfordHigh School for 24 years retiring in 1986.     Nellie was a dedicated teacher and former students still maintain contact with her.

 

            Nellie loved to travel and visited 25 countries.   In 1962 she received a Fulbright to India and in 1964 received a second Fulbright   to study in Iran.   At that time she also traveled in Iraq, Lebanon, and Jordan.

 

            Nellie loved all animals and for many years her dog Joey was her constant companion.   When it became difficult for her to care for a dog she switched her affection to cats.   Prior to entering the care facility in Belvidere, she and her beloved cat Alexander (Alex) lived at the Grand Victorian in Rockford where she was affectionately know as the "cat lady".

 

            Member of Zeta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma.  Former member of the Winnebago County Retired Teachers Association.

 

            Predeceased by   parents.

 

            Survivors include cousins, many friends and former students and special friend William Galaway of Palm Springs, CA.

 

            Memorial service of remembrance at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 18th at Rosman Uehling Kinzer Funeral Home, 1125 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI.   Lunch will follow at the funeral home.

 

            In lieu of flowers memorials to Fund for Animals or to the American Parkinson Disease Association.
